Patti Bolen was elected sheriff of Valley County, Idaho in November 2004 and took office in January 2005, becoming the first woman elected sheriff in the history of Idaho. She served eighteen years across four full terms and retired in January 2023. At the time of her election Valley County, in west-central Idaho, was a small rural jurisdiction; no woman had previously been elected to lead one of Idaho's 44 county sheriff offices.
