Rosie Rivera was sworn in as sheriff of Salt Lake County, Utah on 15 August 2017, becoming the first woman elected sheriff in the history of Utah — and the first Latina to hold the office in the state. Salt Lake County is Utah's largest jurisdiction; Rivera came to the office after a 24-year career in Unified Police of Greater Salt Lake. She has been re-elected to subsequent terms and is still serving.
Multiple Utah press accounts emphasise that Rivera was the first woman elected statewide in this position — in roughly 130 years of Utah county sheriff offices. The next Utah first-woman event noted by the dataset is Kacey Bates's October 2025 swearing-in as Summit County sheriff.
